Dear IPC Members:
Sustainability is receiving increasing attention across the electronics industry, and IPC’s Environment and Health team is working to better support our members on their ESG journey. See Top News of the Week below for their new analysis of electronics company ESG reports, and let us know if you have any questions on ESG policies. |
Meanwhile, IPC’s team in Europe continues to highlight the importance of investing in the broader, entire electronics manufacturing ecosystem, not just semiconductor chips.
With policymakers active on issues affecting our industry across the globe, now is the time to get involved with IPC advocacy and make your voice heard (including on this newsletter itself). Read on and click through to learn more.
All the best,
Chris Mitchell
Vice President, Global Government Relations

TOP NEWS OF THE WEEK
IPC Analysis Shows Industry Leaders are Tracking ESG Risks: Leading companies in the electronics manufacturing industry are intentional about their environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities, with climate change and energy use chief among them, a new IPC analysis shows. As part of IPC’s ESG for Electronics initiative, IPC is investigating the most common ESG methods and priorities of leading companies in the sector. Sustainability is a growing priority across the electronics industry, and it will be important to know what aspects of sustainability are being prioritized by electronics industry actors. Let us know if you have any insights or questions. IPC Contact: Kelly Scanlon.
Secure your Spot at IPC’s Advanced Packaging Symposium in October: IPC is hosting a conference October 11-12 in Washington, D.C., addressing opportunities and challenges for advanced packaging production in North America and Europe. The Advanced Packaging Symposium will feature a powerful lineup of speakers from leading electronics companies and government agencies in the United States and Europe. Please reach out if you have questions. IPC Contact: Ken Schramko.
Share Your Feedback on the Global Advocacy Report: IPC is interested in your feedback! Please take five minutes to share your opinions of IPC Global Advocacy Report with us. Individuals who complete the survey and provide their contact information will be entered to win a $100 Amazon gift card. The survey closes next Monday, September 19. IPC Contact: Chris Mitchell.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“We saw more disruption than ever in the last 18 months, but supply chains are resilient and adaptive. They adjust.”
- IPC’s Chief Economist Shawn DuBravac provided insights on the supply chain for electronics manufacturing service (EMS) providers in a recent interview with I-Connect007. |
EUROPEAN UNION
EU Proposes Ban on Products Linked to Forced Labor: The European Commission on Wednesday proposed a ban in the EU single market on all products and components made with forced labor. The ban will include imported goods; does not target specific companies or industries; and is likely aimed at addressing human rights concerns in China's Xinjiang region. Let us know if this will affect your business. IPC Contact: Alison James.
IPC Advocates for Advanced Packaging to European Policymakers: IPC recently met with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to make the case for a reinforced electronics manufacturing ecosystem in Europe. IPC advocated for greater advanced packaging support and a “silicon-to-systems” approach to ensure Europe’s supply chain resilience and technological leadership. The meetings came amid ongoing negotiations in the European Parliament on the European Chips Act. IPC will continue to meet with European policymakers to highlight the strategic importance of Europe’s electronics manufacturers. IPC Contact: Alison James.
ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
IPC Joins Industry in Opposing UK RoHS Exemption Fees: IPC, alongside the RoHS Industry Umbrella Project, recently submitted comments opposing a proposed UK Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) regulation that would impose an application fee for filing exemptions to the UK RoHS Directive. As a reminder, UK RoHS restricts the use of 10 hazardous substances found in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). We will continue to track UK RoHS activities. Please let us know if you would like to learn more. IPC Contact: Kelly Scanlon.
Japan Releases Annual Report on Chemical Safety Law: On August 22, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) released the 2021 annual report of its Chemical Substance Control Law (CSCL), which covered the enforcement status of the nation’s chemical safety law. The report included new chemical substances registration data, risk assessment status of chemical substances on the market, and information on other regulating measures. Let us know if you have any questions. IPC Contact: Kelly Scanlon.
TAX, TRADE, AND SUPPLY CHAIN
How Will the Latest Policy Activity in Congress Affect Electronics? I-Connect007 recently published a guide to the latest legislative activities in the U.S. Congress and how they will affect our industry going forward. Hear from IPC President and CEO John Mitchell and more on the latest political developments affecting electronics manufacturers and where we go from here. Let us know if you have any questions. IPC Contact: Ken Schramko.

What IPC is reading: A new U.S. Department of Commerce report summarizing 250 public comments regarding the needs of the U.S. domestic semiconductor industry, including financial support, infrastructure, research and development (R&D), and workforce. Comments submitted by IPC and U.S. Partnership for Assured Electronics (USPAE) emphasized the need for a silicon-to-systems approach, covering every link in the electronics supply chain. |
We look forward to hearing from keynote speaker E. Jan Vardaman, President and Founder, TechSearch International, Inc., as she presents “Setting the Stage: Building the North American Advanced Packaging Ecosystem: Economic Challenges and Opportunities,” at the IPC Advanced Packaging Symposium on Tuesday, October 11. |
